Abstract

In a method for reproducing an article on a reduced scale, a duplicate of the article is first made from a polyvinyl resin (e.g. polyvinyl chloride or P.V.C.-acetate) containing plasticizer (e.g. dioctyl phthalate) in an amount equal by weight to that of the resin. The duplicate is then shrunk by immersion in a solvent which will leach out a selected amount of the plasticizer, e.g. commercial ethyl alcohol, ethyl acetate and mixtures thereof. The reduced replica is then dried and used to make a mould by electro-forming. A liquid moulding composition is applied to the interior wall of the mould to form a thin liquid film and the mould is heated to set the film. The shrinking procedure may be effected in steps to make a series of reduced replicas of the original article, e.g. dolls' heads. The final articles may be of thermoplastic or thermosetting material. In an example, the composition of one initial duplicate of a head, in percentage by weight, was: P.V.C. 49, dioctyl phthalate 49, lead silicate 2. The leaching solvent used was a mixture of 3 parts by weight of commercial ethyl alcohol with 1 of commercial ethyl acetate, and the head was immersed in the solvent for 48 hours at a temperature of 20 DEG C. to 25 DEG C. As a result the head was shrunk by about 17.7 per cent, the reduced replica being then used to make a mould.
