Abstract

Alcohols are produced by oxidising a feedmixture of alpha-olefins and trialkyl aluminium with an oxygen-containing gas to produce partially oxidised aluminium alkyl in which up to 70% of the alkyl substituents are converted to alkoxy groups, separating, by stripping, the a -olefin from the partially oxidised aluminium alkyl, and oxidising with an oxygen-containing gas the separated partially-oxidised aluminium alkyl to produce trialkoxy-aluminium which is then hydrolysed to the corresponding alcohol. The process is suitable for treating the mixture of a -olefins and trialkyl aluminium obtained by treating aluminium triethyl with ethylene. The solvent used for this reaction may be retained in the mixture of alpha-olefins and trialkyl aluminium used as starting material and is stripped off with the a -olefine after the first oxidation step. In general the alkyl groups of the trialkyl aluminium each contain 4-30 carbon atoms.
