Abstract
874,650. Measuring temperature electrically. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. Sept. 5, 1957 [June 7, 1956], No. 17694/56. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for measuring the temperature at a series of spaced levels inside a silo comprises a central conductor of one element to which a number of second conductors are soldered at spaced intervals forming a series of thermocouples. As shown (Fig. 1) the thermocouples comprise a continuous insulated constantan wire 1 with insulated copper wires 2 soldered or welded thereto at equal intervals to provide the hot junctions. The copper wires are colourcoded and of a length predetermined by the use to which the device is to be put. The device with a preferably transparent insulating sheath is manufactured in an indefinite length, and multiples of the predetermined length are cut as required. A cable may be formed by putting up several thermocouple ropes 4 (Fig. 4) in a common sheath 6 with a number of steel cables 5 to limit the strain in the thermocouple ropes. A bare conductor may be incorporated in the sheath and earthed, to prevent the accumulation of static charges. The positions of the hot junctions in the several ropes of a cable may be staggered.
