Abstract
320,193. Callender's Cable & Construction Co., Ltd., and Brazier, L. G. Aug. 29, 1928. Thermometers.-In order to determine the temperature of a point within an electric cable which is not accessible for direct measurement, a reference length of cable is heated internally at a rate proportional to the heating effect of the load on the actual cable at the point of interest, the temperatures of the exterior surfaces of the two cables are maintained at the same value or in a defined relation to each other, and means are provided for indicating the temperature in the interior of the reference cable at a point corresponding to the point of interest in the real cable. The point A denotes the position at which the core temperature of the cable 1 is to be determined, this, cable having a number ot conductors 2 and a lead sheath 3. The reference cable 4 is preferably a short length of the real cable in which the central strand of each conductor has been replaced by a heating resistance 6. A transformer 7 supplies current to the wires 6 so that the heating effect per unit length of the cable 4 is equal or proportional to that of the current in the cable 1. The hot junctions 8<a>, 9<a> of thermo-couples 8, 9 are attached to the sheaths 3, 5, the cold junctions being mamtained at the same temperature. The two thermocouples are connected in opposition to a controller 17 arranged to switch in a heating device 12 or a cooling device so that the sheaths 3, 5 are maintained at the same temperature. The hot junction 16<a >of a thermo-couple 16 is attached to the wire 6 and this couple is connected to a measuring-instrument 15 which indicates the desired core temperature of the cable 1.
