In a cathodic protection control system the potential between a reference potential and a metallic surface is maintained constant by varying the current to immersed anodes. As shown, the potential difference between a silver chloride reference electrode B and a hull is opposed by the voltage developed across a resistor 12 by a reference battery A. The resultant current energizes a coil 11 of a sensing relay C having a moving arm 16 which takes up a position touching a contact 17 or 18 or intermediate between. The rotation of a motor G is determined by relays 20, 22 connected to contacts 17, 18. The motor drives the sliding contact 21 of a variable-ratio auto-transformer 19 supplying current to a platinum anode through a rectifier 25. The sequence of operations is controlled by a timing device actuating by cams a switch 1 de-energizing a re-set solenoid 14 of the sensing relay C, a switch 2 energizing the power relays 20, 22 and a switch 3 energizing the motor G.
