Abstract

Before being encased in concrete or like cementitious material the surface of ferrous metal is freed of any scale and oxide, an insoluble coating of iron, manganese or zinc phosphate is deposited thereon, and the phosphated surface is then covered with a composition comprising a chlorinated rubber, a modified chlorinated rubber, an epoxy resin, polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl acetate. The composition may also contain a pigment as an extender, e.g. ferric oxide, ferrous phosphate, strontium chromate, strontium sulphate, barium chromate, calcium orthoplumbate or metallic lead, and a hydrogen acceptor, e.g. glyoxal. The exemplified composition consists, by weight, of 33% epoxy ester modified with linseed oil, 43% strontium sulphate, 7% strontium chromate, 16% white spirit and 1% cobalt naphthenate. Specifications 812,745 and 870,675 are referred to.ALSO:Before being encased in concrete or like cementitious material the surface of ferrous metal is freed of any scale and oxide, an insoluble amorphous or crystalline coating of iron, manganese or zinc phosphate is deposited thereon, and the phosphated surface is then covered with a composition comprising a chlorinated rubber, a modified chlorinated rubber, an epoxy resin, polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl acetate (see Group III). Scale and oxide may be removed (a) by pickling in hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, (b) by the application of a descaling jelly or paste, e.g. that disclosed in Specification 812,745, or (c) mechanically as by wirebrushing. Alternatively, the removal of scale and oxide and the deposition of the phosphate coating may be effected simultaneously by the application of a solution such as that disclosed in Specification 870,675.
