[Also in Group XXII] A transmission for imparting irregular reciprocatory movement to a tool or work carrier 12 comprises means 1, 9 to reciprocate the carrier and means 6 automatically operative at any predetermined period during the movement imparted to the carrier by the means 1, 9 to impart a predetermined pattern of substantially coaxial irregular reciprocatory movement to the means 1, 9. The carrier 12, which may carry a stamping tool 14, is slidably supported in a guideway 13 and pivotally connected to the rod 10 of the piston-and-cylinder device 1, 9. The upper end of the cylinder has an extension 4 in which is a hole engaged by an eccentric 6 on a shaft 7 supported in bearings 8. The shaft is provided with a lever 19 adjustably supporting an arm 20 having at its remote end a follower 22 spring-urged into contact with a rotatable cam 17 fixed to a shaft 18. In operation, fluid pressure is supplied alternately to the ends of the cylinder to reciprocate the piston and carrier 12 from a valve which is adjustable to vary the length and timing of the reciprocatory movement. At the same time, rotation of the cam 17 rocks the eccentric 6 to impart a reciprocatory movement to the cylinder, the spacing of the high portions of the cam causing the latter movement to be additive to, or subtractive from, that of the piston at the ends of, or during, either the forward or reverse strokes of the piston.
