Abstract
An Alalloy piston for use in an Al-alloy cylinder is provided on its skirt with a coating of Albronze. The coating is preferably applied by flame-spraying after the skirt has been roughened by grit-blasting or the like, and the coated skirt then finished to its final dimensions. The Alalloy of the cylinder may contain Si 15-20%, the Alalloy of the piston may contain Si 12%, and suitable Albronzes consist of Cu containing Al 4-11% together with preferably not more than 10% in all of other alloying elements such as Fe 0.5-5%, Ni up to 7%, Si up to 3%, Mn up to 3%, Sn up to 1%, Zn up to 1% and Te up to 1%. The preferred Al-bronze consists of Cu 90%, Al 8% and Fe 2%. The coating is stated to be semi-porous so that it retains lubricating oil, and may be used in conjunction with conventional Cr-plated piston rings.
