Abstract

Conjugated diolefines are purified by adding separately an alkali metal or alloy thereof and an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic chlorinated, brominated or iodinated hydrocarbon containing at least one halogen bonded to a non-benzenoid carbon atom in the absence of oxygen and at a temperature precluding polymerization. Specified halides are ethyl iodide, n-butyl chloride or bromide, primary isobutyl chloride or bromide, n-hexyl or n-octyl chloride or bromide, dodecyl chloride or bromide, stearyl chloride, cyclohexyl chloride or bromide, 1-chloro-tetra- or deca-hydronaphthalene, benzyl chloride or bromide, b -chloro-ethyl-benzene, 1,4-dichlorobutane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, p-di-chloromethyl-benzene, and benzal chloride or bromide, and they are used in amounts approximately equivalent to the alkali metal. The alkali metal is used in amounts of 0.1-5 parts per 100 parts by weight of diolefine and is preferably finely divided, e.g. less than 1 mm. diameter. Lithium, sodium and potassium are specified; they may be alloyed with another alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal. The process can be effected continuously or intermittently at 0-80 DEG C. by refluxing in the presence of the purifying agents and distilling off the purified diolefine; in continuous processes the diolefine is continuously added and continuously distilled off. Inert hydrocarbons may also be present.
