Abstract
A polymerization catalyst is formed by mixing a metal hydride, an aluminium halide and a halide of titanium, zirconium, hafnium or thorium. The metal hydride, which may be sodium hydride or lithium aluminium hydride, is mixed with aluminium chloride, bromide, fluoride or iodide, and a chloride, bromide, fluoride or iodide of titanium, zirconium, hafnium or thorium, in an inert solvent such as benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, decahydronaphthalene or dodecane. The catalyst may be coated or adsorbed on an inert solid carrier such as cryolite, clays, silica-alumina or charcoal. In examples, catalysts comprise lithium aluminium hydride, aluminium chloride, and titanium tetrachloride.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized using a catalyst formed by mixing a metal hydride, an aluminium halide and a halide of titanium, zirconium, hafnium or thorium. The metal hydride, which may be sodium hydride or lithium aluminium hydride, is mixed with aluminium chloride, bromide, fluoride or iodide, and a chloride, bromide, fluoride or iodide of titanium, zirconium, hafnium or thorium, in an inert solvent for ethylene, such as benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, decahydronaphthalene or dodecane. The catalyst may be coated or adsorbed on an inert solid carrier such as cryolite, clays, silica-alumina or charcoal. Ethylene is polymerized by passing it into a solvent containing the catalyst at atmospheric or higher pressure, at a temperature between room temperature and 200 DEG C. In examples, ethylene is polymerized using catalysts comprising lithium aluminium hydride, aluminium chloride, and titanium tetrachloride.
