Abstract

Olefin polymerization catalysts comprise mixtures of an alkyl or alkylene halide, titanium powder and at least one of iodine, bromine, mercuric halides, ethers, tertiary amines, powdered beryllium, magnesium, chromium, zinc, cadmium and tin metals or their alloys. The alkyl halide has the formula RX and the alkylene halide X (CH2)nX, where X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, R is alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl and n is an integer not less than 3. The mixing is preferably carried out by ball-milling in an inert hydrocarbon medium at above room temperature.ALSO:Olefins are polymerized using as catalysts mixtures of an alkyl or alkylene halide, titanium powder and at least one of iodine, bromine, mercuric halides, ethers, tertiary amines, powdered beryllium, magnesium, aluminium zinc, cadmium and tin metals or their alloys. The alkyl halide has the formula RX and the alkylene halide X(CH2)nW where X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, R is alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl and n is an integer not less than 3. The process may be carried out in an inert dispersing medium at 50-150 DEG C.
