Abstract
Organo-silicon polymers are prepared by refluxing under anhydrous conditions an alkyl silicon halide with an oxide of a metal of the second series of Group 1 or 2 of the Periodic table, which has mildly basic properties, viz. copper, silver, beryllium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium or mercury. An inert solvent for the polymer may be present. Mixed substituted silicon halides may be employed. In example 1, diethyl silicon dichloride was refluxed with cupric oxide, and the silicone extracted with ethyl ether. Example 2 is similar, petroleum ether (B.P. 80-100 DEG C.) being used to extract the product. In example 3, zinc oxide is used and the product extracted with petroleum ether (B.P. 60-80 DEG C.). According to the Provisional Specification the reaction may be carried out with an oxide of a metal without limitation. The example describes the refluxing of diethyl silicon dichloride with red mercuric oxide in toluene.
