Abstract
Improved polymers of N-vinyl carbazole are produced by adding to a solution of commercial poly N-vinyl carbazole in benzene or trichlorethylene sufficient methyl alcohol to precipitate a polymer 85 per cent by weight of which has a relative viscosity in 2 per cent benzene solution of not less than 4 and no part of which has a viscosity of less than 3.25. Preferably, the polymer is prepared by polymerization in trichlorethylene at a temperature not above 0 DEG C. and in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, e.g. a compound of boron fluoride and diethyl ether, and the solution of polymer is diluted to 5 per cent by addition of trichlorethylene before addition of methyl alcohol. The poly N-vinyl carbazole produced is suitable for the manufacture of films and sheet materials adapted for use as spacing and dielectric in electric capacitors.
