Abstract
Ethylene is polymerized using as catalyst the reaction product of an organic compound of a Group I, II or III metal and of formula RnMeX, wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical, X is a hydrocarbon radical or halogen, Me is the metal and n is an integer which is less by one than the valency of Me, with an ionic compound of manganese or a Group VIII metal, e.g. a halide. In examples, ethylene is added during the polymerization and the catalyst is formed in situ in the organic solvent used as a polymerization medium. Subsequent to polymerization catalyst may be destroyed and polymer purified with materials such as methanol, hydrochloric acid, tetrahydronaphthalene, acetone and wetting agent. The products are linear and crystalline and may be stretched and formed into films and fibres. Fractionation with ether may be effected.
