Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons are polymerised in the presence of a liquid medium and a catalyst comprising an aluminium halide and an inorganic mercury derivative preferably a compound capable of forming some sort of loose complex with the halide. The term "inorganic mercury derivative" includes a salt of mercury with an organic acid but does not include a carbon-metal bond. Derivatives of mercury mentioned are mercuric chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, sulphide, cyanide, chromate, and oxide, potassium mercuri-iodide, and mercuric acetate. The halide may be aluminium chloride or bromide. The hydrocarbon may be ethylene, propylene, butylene, pentene, butadiene 1 : 3, styrene, or alpha-methylstyrene, and mixtures. The catalyst can if desired be supported on an inert carrier, e.g. charcoal or silica gel. The liquid medium may be trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, ethylene dibromide, cyclohexane, n-decane, n-hexane, n-heptane, n-dodecane, stannic tetrachloride, and silicon tetrachloride.ALSO:A catalyst for polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons in the presence of a liquid medium comprises an aluminium halide and an inorganic mercury derivative e.g. a compound capable of forming some sort of loose complex with the halide. The term "inorganic mercury derivative" includes a salt of mercury with an organic acid. The catalyst may be supported on an inert carrier e.g. charcoal or silica gel. The two components may be deposited on the carrier by impregnating the carrier with a solution of the components and drying the carrier, or by impregnating the carrier with the mercury derivative and adding a solution of the aluminium halide to the impregnated carrier. Derivatives of mercury mentioned are mercuric chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, sulphide, cyanide, chromate, and oxide, potassium mercuri-iodide, and mercuric acetate. The halide may be aluminium bromide or chloride. The liquid medium may be organic or inorganic e.g. trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, ethylene dibromide, cyclohexane, n-decane, n-hexane, n-heptane, n-dodecane, stannic tetrachloride, or silicon tetrachloride.
