Abstract

Hexaethylbenzene is obtained by reacting benzene with ethylene in the presence of (a) an alkyl halide (b) chlorine, bromine or iodine and (c) a metal comprising aluminium. The alkyl halide may be a fluoride, chloride, bromide or iodide and is preferably ethyl bromide. The metal may be aluminium alone or aluminium with nickel, cobalt, iron, platinum, palladium or iridium and particularly nickel in a weight ratio to aluminium between 20:1 and 0,05:1. In the examples a pressure vessel is charged with aluminium powder or "Raney" (Registered Trade Mark) nickelaluminium alloy, iodine, and pressure sensitive phials containing benzene and ethyl bromide. The vessel is pressured with ethylene to rupture the phials and heated to commence the reaction and hexaethylbenzene recovered from the product by distillation.
