Abstract
Coal is hydrogenated by pasting with an oil to form a paste containing 10-80% by weight of coal, forming a multi-phase mixture with hydrogen at 2,500-12,000 p.s.i.g., heating to at least 495 DEG C. and causing intimate contact of the gas and liquid phases to permit a reaction rate of at least 150 pounds of coal reacted per cubic foot of reactor volume per hour. The pasting oil is preferably product boiling between 330 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure and 350 DEG C. at 5-50 mm. mercury. A catalyst may be added, e.g. nickel, tin, iron, lead and their derivatives. Temperature may be 500 DEG -600 DEG C. and hydrogen consumption 0,01-0,07 pound per pound of coal introduced. Intimate mixing is necessary, e.g. by maintaining turbulent flow at 3-80 feet per second or using an agitated reactor. Tubular reactors may comprise several vertical pipes with heating jackets, the downward pipes having 25 to 75% smaller diameter to minimise film formation on the walls.
