In an arrangement in which one or more magnetic amplifiers are supplied with alternating-current power from an alternator, the latter is retroactively controlled to maintain the ratio of its voltage to frequency approximately constant. An arrangement is described in which a motor-alternator supplies power to a number of magnetic amplifiers. The alternator voltage is applied through a saturable inductance and rectifier to energize control windings of a further magnetic amplifier which varies the alternator field excitation. The presence of the inductance ensures approximately constant " volts per cycle " and this arrangement is suited to the supply of magnetic amplifiers the characteristics of which are influenced in opposite senses by changes of voltage and frequency in the same sense.
