Abstract

<PICT:0873090/III/1> Chemical reactions in gases are effected by a high-frequency electric discharge between electrodes 4, 5 on a re-entrant coaxial line resonator 3 and the reaction products are withdrawn through a nozzle in one or both electrodes. The nozzle has a mouth of narrow diameter through which the products are withdrawn at high velocity and rapidly cooled so that no reversion occurs. Both electrodes are cooled and the gases may be withdrawn at sonic or supersonic speed through cylindrical or convergent/divergent nozzles. The gas pressure may be atmospheric or above atmospheric, e.g. up to 50 atmos. The electric discharge or arc may be vertical or horizontal. Suitable gaseous reactions are producing nitric oxide from air, oxygen enriched air, or from oxygen and nitrogen streams, e.g. O2:N2 molar ratio of (60-50):(40-50), containing less than 1% molar of oxides of carbon; hydrazine from nitrogen and hydrogen, ammonia, ammonia and nitrogen or ammonia and hydrogen; hydrogen peroxide from water vapour and oxygen or water vapour alone; sulphur monoxide from sulphur vapour and oxygen; and hydroxylamine from water vapour and ammonia.
