Abstract
872,776. Automatic voltage control systems. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 4, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1956], No. 30930/56. Class 38 (4). A variable direct current transforming circuit arrangement comprises two alternately-conducting switches 4, 6 and an inductive storage means 5 the transformation ratio of the arrangement being governed by the ratio of the conducting times of the switches. An inductor 5 receives energy from a D.C. source 1 when a valve 4 is conducting whilst the change of potential of the cathode of the valve 4 when it is cut off causes the valve 6 to conduct, whereby the energy in the inductor 5 is discharged into a load 3. The ratio of the input volts E 1 to the output volts E 2 is adjustable by means of a potentiometer 9 connected across the load 3, the voltage tapped off this potentiometer being compared with a reference voltage E, the differing being fed to a switching generator 7 by way of an amplifier 8, the switching generator 7 controlling the on and off periods of the valve 4. The generator 7 may be a valve or transistor multivibrator whose output controls the grid potential of the valve 4 and the reference voltage E may be obtained by way of a Zener diode. The transforming arrangement may have a step-up ratio by arranging the valve 4 in shunt to the supply instead of in series.
