The invention comprises compounds of the tautomeric general formulae <FORM:0872708/IV (b)/1> wherein X represents -CO- or -CO.O-and R1 and R2 represent hydrocarbon radicals which can be interrupted by oxygen and in which any aromatic ring present can be substituted by halogen atoms or nitro groups and the preparation thereof by treating a compound of the general formula <FORM:0872708/IV (b)/2> wherein R3 represents a radical corresponding to R1 and R2, in a liquid medium, with ammonia. g -Phthalimido-b -keto-carboxylic acid esters and g -phthalimido-b -diones of the above general formula are prepared by condensing an a -phthalimido-carboxylic acid halide of the general formula <FORM:0872708/IV (b)/3> wherein Y is chlorine or bromine, by means of a metal of the first or second group of the Periodic Table or by means of a derivative of such a metal, with a b -keto-carboxylic acid ester or with a b -diketo compound of the general formula <FORM:0872708/IV (b)/4>
