Abstract
872,684. Crankshafts. NORTON MOTORS Ltd. Feb. 1, 1960 [Jan. 30, 1959], No. 3325/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A bearing for a big-end of an engine having a built-up crank-shaft has an eccentric inner race 14 which is clamped axially between flywheels 10, 11, the portion of the race having the greatest radial thickness being in a plane containing the axes of a crank-pin 12 and the crank-shaft 15, 16 and being located on the shaft side of the crank-pin. The crank-pin 12 is integral with the flywheel 10, is received in a bore of the flywheel 11 and has a screw-threaded end engaged by a nut 13. The tightening of the nut 13, which is in an annular recess of the flywheel 11, clamps the race 14. The shaft is formed of integral spigots 15, 16 on the flywheels 10, 11 and rollers 17 are located between the race 14 and the big end 18 of a connecting rod 19. Axial location of the big end 18 is by rings 20 mounted in circular recesses in the inner faces of the flywheels. A plug 21 is fitted into the crank pin 12 and, having radial and axial passages therein, conveys lubricant from an axial passage 22 in the shaft to the bearing.
