872,556. Machine-tool details. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. July 1, 1958 [April 1, 1957], No. 10627/57. Addition to 839,256. Class 83 (3). The method of toolwear compensation described in the parent Specification is supplemented by moving the tool periodically to a position in which the tool itself or, an image thereof, coincides, as long as its shape is correct, with a template or image of an ideal tool. The tool 1 may be brought up to a template 2 over which a light-source 3 is arranged. Shade side-panels 4 (one only shown) prevent light passing except between the tool and template. The amount of light passing through the gap, due to wear of the tool, is passed through a collector lens 5 which concentrates the light on to a photo-cell 8. The output of the latter is amplified at 9 and fed to an indicating instrument 11 and feed-setting device 10. Contact between the tool and template may be used to stop the feed, or the machine, or the feed may be stopped at a predetermined light value. An alternative arrangement using a magnified white-on-black image of the tool on which a correspondingly magnified shadow of the actual tool is superimposed, is described.
