Abstract
872,085. Washing granular materials. HARVENGT, E. Feb. 13, 1958 [Apirl 4, 1957], No. 4806/58. Class 82(2) A wet separating apparatus comprises a vessel having a discharge orifice and means for establishing within the orifice a magnetic field of sufficient strength to control, with the aid of magnetic particles added to the orifice, the discharge therefrom. As shown the outlet 5 from a vessel may he surrounded by the poles of an electromagnet, the current to which is controlled by a rheostat 33. Magnetic particles added to the orifice form a barrier therein which is sufficient to prevent discharge from the orifice until the load of material on the barrier becomes sufficient to break the barrier down; the material is then discharged and a new barrier is formed. The intensity of the field of the magnet may be varied according to the optical properties of the discharge or the weight of the discharge at any moment and means may be provided to shut the orifice by mechanical means in the event of a failure of the electromagnet.
