Abstract

872,012. Valves. BUTLER, G. A. April 9, 1958 [Sept. 26, 1957], No. 11168/58. Class 135. A gate valve comprises a closure member of two parts 63, 64, spring-urged apart and slidable between seats 17, 18 under the control of a hand wheel 49 and stem 40. Each seat has a groove 23, the one downstream being arranged to be supplied, in the closed position of the valve, with lubricating and sealing material from an associated reservoir 26 via a passage 30 and a recess 86 in the closure member by inlet line pressure moving the appropriate parts 63, 64 off its seat against its loading spring and acting in the valve chamber 14 on.a piston 92 in each reservoir, the pressures acting on the upstream reservoir being balanced. Reverse flow of the sealing material or dirt is prevented by a spring-loaded ball-check valve 80. Each reservoir may be refilled through a connection 94. An annular groove 19 in each valve seat also fed from the associated reservoir seals the valve seat in the body. A reservoir and its associated valve seat and check valve can be removed as a unit for maintenance.
