872,007. Dental handpieces. KALTENBACH, A., and HOFFMEISTER. E. Nov. 28, 1958 [Nov. 30, 1957; Oct. 16, 1958], No. 38521/58. Class 81 (2). A dental handpiece having an air turbine in the head has continuous air and water tubes extending from the head to the rear of the handpiece but, to assist cleaning and assembly, the handle itself is divided into sections at each end. The turbine in the head 1 is supplied with compressed air through a tube 4 communicating with a hose nipple 6 and water is supplied to a discharge nozzle 29 through a tube 5, leading from a stub tube 10. This is connected to a flexible supply pipe running through the bore of the air pipe. The neck 2 of the handpiece has a conical exterior surface 3 which fits into the complementarily shaped end 23 of the middle section 18 of the tubular handle. The rear part 16 of the handle engages and locates the part 18 by a shoulder 22 and is retained by screwing on to a collar 19 secured on the water and air tubes. At the rear of the handpiece the air tube is gripped by a sleeve 7 which is held by a flanged nut 16 and the tightening action of this nut also seals a washer 14 in a cup-shaped member 12 so as to hold the tubes securely. In a modified form of construction a ring nut is located between the two handle parts 18, 16, the latter of which is not supported on a collar 19. In this form, the nut is used to force the two parts apart, after assembly, so that, since the head 2 is secured to the tubes 4, 5 at one end while the attachment 6 is secured at the other, the whole assembly becomes locked rigid. In both forms exhaust air passes through suitable drillings to the rear of the handpiece.
