Abstract
871,772. Knitting. UNIVERSAL MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. Aug. 12, 1959 [Aug. 29, 1958], No. 27533/59. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group IX] In order to hold out to width during drawing off, articles which are knitted in string formation and the beginnings 1 of which are wider than their terminations 2, a thread 3 is laid in, to be tied in by the loops of the first course of each article, and is held at each selvedge by a clamp 6 which, as it descends under the action of weights 10, is rocked outwardly from chain-line to full-line position, by reason of the passage of pins or rollers 13, 14 on it along angled guides 12, to tension the inlay. When the inlay thread has passed between cooperating draw-off rollers, the clamps pass out of the guides and their jaws open automatically, e.g. under spring action. When a length of thread 3 has been laid in, the thread is cut by a knife and movement of the thread in an unthreading direction, through the eye of the thread guide 4, rotates an eccentric 20 to clamp the thread against a stop 19. The inlay thread 3 may be provided with roughened or uneven regions; e.g. it may be of synthetic material and have a thinner filament 23 wound about it in a helix, to prevent slipping between inlay and knitted loops.
