Abstract

871,763. Winding yarns, tension control. LEESONA HOLT Ltd. Nov. 20, 1958, No. 37316/58. Class 120(2) In a textile winding machine each winding head includes a magnetic slipping clutch, the input side of which is driven from a variable speed gear for initially setting the input speed which is then maintained constant throughout the winding operation and the output side of which drives the spindle, an adjustable brake means operated by yarn tension being provided for automatically controlling the speed of the driven member of the clutch during winding, and a grooved cam being provided and driven by the winding spindle for oscillating a traversing yarn guide to lay the yarn in precise manner on the package. In the arrangement shown winding spindle 10 is driven from the electric motor 16 through a variable speed gear 18 and magnetic slipping clutch 20, the latter comprising a driving member 21 carrying a number of permanent magnets, and a driven member 22 comprising an eddy current ring 32 and keyed to the spindle 10. The brake consists of a band 35 embracing the ring 32 and controlled by compensator arm 45 under the action of the tension in yarn Y. In operation the speed of driving member 21 is set to give the required tension when the package 14 is full with the brake band only operating very lightly or not at all and the brake is then adjusted to give the same tension on an empty tube at the start of winding. The unit then maintains this tension substantially constant as the diameter of the package increases during winding.
