Abstract

871,533. Making stud-and-socket fasteners. F.T. PRODUCTS Ltd. Oct. 2, 1957 [Oct. 4, 1956], No. 17986/59. Divided out of 871,531. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXV] In the manufacture of a fastener of the type comprising a base-portion and a stud portion 26, an elongate hole lying substantially along the longitudinal axis of a strip of material, is punched out so as to form two arms 23, 24, joined at their ends, the arms then being forced relatively outwards. The hole is wider at one end than the other, as shown in Fig. 1. At the same time as the arms are forced apart, the outside of the right-hand end of the strip is sheared to shape and the arms are twisted; those portions of the arms which are to constitute the limbs 28, 29 of the stud 'portion are twisted in opposite senses so that, as shown in Fig. 2, their inside edges are pushed upwardly; the remaining portion of the arms which will be in the base portion are twisted so that their outside edges are pushed upwardly. These steps may take place sequentially, if desired. The limbs 28, 29 are then further twisted to 90 degrees from their original position, as shown in Fig. 3, the twist on the other portions of the arms 23, 24 is removed and elbows 32, 33 are formed on the limbs 28, 29. The strip is then bent at right-angles to form the stud portion and the base portion is bent twice at rightangles to hook shape, as shown in Fig. 7. The extent to which the arms 23, 24 are forced apart can be varied to suit the size of the aperture the stud portion is to engage.
