A toothed element for a sliding clasp fastener comprises a strip of synthetic material wherein there are a plurality of transverse cut-outs 2 which define a plurality of spaced-apart transverse cross-pieces 3 each of which has, midway between its ends, a widened part 4 which provides a tooth of the element when the latter is folded along its longitudinal centre line, each cross-piece being bifurcated at each of its ends by an acute angled notch 5 symmetrically disposed relative to the respective cross-piece and converging to a point lying between oppositely directed points provided by the respective adjacent cut-outs, so that the bifurcations provide along each longitudinal margin of the strip, a zig-zag fixing edge of the element. The strip is sewn to a stringer tape 10 and longitudinal grooves 11 are provided in the strip to receive the sewing threads. In a modification the edge portion of the strip is made thicker than the remainder so that a thin stringer tape can be used. In a further modification, not shown, instead of the stringer tape being received between the two edges 7 it is fastened to the outside of one of the edges 7 and a cord 14 is secured between the two edges. The stringer tape can be secured to the strip by weaving the tape into position.
