Abstract
<PICT:0871157/III/1> <PICT:0871157/III/2> A crucible for use in a zone-refining apparatus is formed from a number of metal tubes of high thermal and electrical conductivity p arranged sufficiently close together to prevent the escape of molten material. Fig. 1, shows a crucible formed from polished silver tubes 1 arranged in a semi-circle and slightly spaced from one another. The tubes communicate at one end with headers 2, 3 having an inlet 4 and an outlet 5 respectively for cooling fluid. Fig. 2 shows a crucible forming part of a crystal-pulling apparatus. The tubes 1 are arranged as a truncated cone and communicate with a lower header and with an upper annular header 6. The header 6 is divided by baffles into two sections and cooling fluid passes from an inlet 7 downwards through half the tubes, upwards through the other half and to an outlet 8. A transparent silica envelope 9 surrounds the crucible. Specifications 827,676 and 871,156 are referred to.
