870,870. Making sheet and foil. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1958 [Nov. 6, 1957], No. 34820/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Working at specified temperatures; altering physical properties.-A method of producing thin gauge silicon-iron sheet having good magnetic properties and very low magnetostriction and which is ductile and capable of being cold rolled without annealing at room temperature, comprises hot rolling a plate of an alloy consisting essentially of from 4.5% by weight to 7.5% by weight of silicon and aluminium, the aluminium not exceeding approximately 0.5% by weight, and the balance of the alloy being iron except for incidental impurities, to a thickness of approximately 110 mils., then warm rolling the resulting material at a temperature between the range 275‹ C. and 425‹ C. to a thickness of approximately 25 mils. to produce an elongated microstructure therein. The hot rolling is effected within a temperature range of 750‹ to 850‹ C. The strip obtained from the warm rolling step can be cold rolled to the desired thickness, e.g. 1 and 2 mil., without exhibiting edge cracks. The cold rolled strip is also very ductile and the magnetostriction is nearly zero.
