Abstract

870,835. Hypodermic syringes. BECTON, DICKINSON & CO. Nov. 5, 1958 [June 5, 1958], No. 35567/58. Class 81 (2). An hypodermic needle 10 is mounted in a cap 13 formed of thermoplastic resin material which distorts on exposure to temperatures exceeding 165 ‹ F. by coating the rear end of the needle with a resin bonding agent 19 and inserting it in a bore in the cap 13 as far as a narrowed portion 17 of the bore. As the needle is introduced, the bonding material, preferably an epoxy resin tends to be wiped off the extreme rear end of the needle and to key into an annular recess 18, or recesses (not shown). Instead of having at least one recess, the bore may have a roughened or screw-threaded interior surface to improve adhesion of the bonding agent. The cap is adapted to fit over the end of a syringe body and is preferably formed of polystyrene but cellulose acetate or nitrate, ethyl cellulose, vinyl acetate or chloride, or polymers thereof may be used or polyester resins blended with 10-30% by weight of low-melting resins such as butyl methacrylate or polyvinyl chloride together with a plasticizer or an epoxy resin mixed with 10-30% by weight of a thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride. The bonding agent is preferably a material which is not softened by exposure to sterilizing temperatures of 212‹ to 280 ‹ F. Suggested material is an epoxy resin.
