870,819. Converting rotary into reciprocatory motion. GLEASON WORKS. Feb. 26, 1959 [March 5, 1958], No. 6720/59. Addition to 793,831. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A machine as claimed in the parent Specification for cutting or grinding gears comprising a tool-carrying cradle 11 rotatable in a frame, a column member 18 adjustable relatively to the frame about an axis perpendicular to, and intersecting, the cradle axis 12, a work-head member 16 reciprocable on the column member in a direction parallel to the first-mentioned axis, a work-spindle rotatable in the work-head member about an axis 15 perpendicular to and intersecting the first-mentioned axis, a drive train for connecting the cradle, work-spindle and work-head member for effecting simultaneous oscillation and rotation respectively of the cradle and the work-spindle and reciprocation of the work-head member, the drive train comprising a cam 69 rotatable in one of said members for reciprocating the work-head member, and a unidirectionally rotatable shaft geared to both the cam and the work-spindle for rotating each of them unidirectionally. The cam 69 is engaged by a follower 84 on an arm 85 pivoted to the column 18 at 93. The arm 85 also carries a roller 87 on a block 97 which can be adjusted to-and-from the pivot by a screw 98 and locked by a gib 102. The roller 87 engages a groove in the slide 17 so that rotation of the cam 69 reciprocates the head by a variable stroke. When the roller 87 is coincident with the pivot 93, the slide 17 can be locked and no reciprocation takes place. Specification 544, 892 also is referred to.
