Abstract
1,239,149. Rolling gears. MICHIGAN TOOL CO. 27 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 16110/69. Heading B3M. The teeth on a gear 46 are successively rolled by an oscillating tool 42, the angle between the two flanks of a tooth being bisected by a plane perpendicular to the axis of movement of the tool. The gear, which may be a hypoid gear, has its tooth flanks formed at an angle of other than 90 degrees from a surface of revolution passing through the tooth roots or from a tangent to such a surface. The tool is carried in a driving head 38, and the gear is mounted on a vertically adjustable support 36. Between each oscillation of the tool, the gear is indexed by one tooth. The tool 42 is carried eccentrically on a shaft 48 which is oscillated by a crank 50. The tool performs a rolling motion by the co-operation of a gear sector 52 with a fixed ring gear 54. A slight degree of sliding between the tool and blank can be used to obtain a burnishing action. A common drive is used for oscillating the tool and indexing the gear. Rotation of a cam 118 causes rotation of a ring gear 110, and hence of the blank. An indexing pin, driven by a rotatable cam 124, ensures precise indexing movements by its co-operation with a chuck ring 82. The gear is clamped in position by an hydraulic piston (Fig. 10, not shown).
