870,784. Extruding. UNITED WIRE & SUPPLY CORPORATION. Oct. 22, 1959, No. 35831/59. Class 83 (4). A tube extrusion press, particularly for the hot extrusion of aluminium tubes, has a mandrel M detachably mounted in a chuck 18 secured to the end of the press ram 14, and held therein by locking means 24. Upon the retraction of the ram, a carriage 42 swingable about a shaft 41, is moved from a position 421 into the vertical by an air motor 69. A locking pin 24 is thus withdrawn by a tapered latch 50 and simultaneously the mandrel M is gripped by jaws 55, 56 carried by a frame structure 57 and actuated by an air motor 63. The frame is then moved forwardly along shaft 41 by an air motor 68 to withdraw the mandrel from chuck 18. Carriage 42 with frame 57 supporting the mandrel are then raised to position 42<SP>1</SP> by motor 69. An automatic control system is described.
