Class 143 A bathroom-type platform scale comprises a base, weighing mechanism supported by the base and having two pairs of supporting connections therewith, and indicating mechanism supported by a member in contact with the base only at points adjacent opposite ends of the base so as to minimise errors due to base distortion. The generally rectangular base 5 carries an M-shaped support 11 near each corner, the upper indentations 14 in which supports provide a pair of aligned knife edges for each of two levers 20, 27 whose respective ends 21, 29 are downwardly inclined to co-operate with the supports. The load on the platform 30 is applied to the levers close to each knife edge by feet 31 depending from the platform and acting on hangers 32 supported by the levers, this load being counterbalanced by a spring 23 adjustably supported from the platform and acted on by the outer end 22 of lever 20 which is in turn loaded at 28 by lever 27. A tongue 41 in the end 22 of lever 20 engages one arm of a bell crank lever 40 the other arm of which is coupled with the spring loaded rack 39 by which indicator disc 36 is rotated with pinion 38. The pivot of lever 40, the bearings of pinion 38 and the fixed outer end of the spring 42 which loads the rack are all carried by a channel-sectioned member 45 whose web is secured to the base 5 by rivets 46, 47 near the ends of the base, the intermediate portions of the base being out of contact with the member 45.
