[Also in Group XXXII] With the object of avoiding uneven operation and wear in slotted plate-type non-return valves, a circular spring loading plate for such a valve comprises outer spring arms 1 arranged in sequence round the outer periphery of the plate and inner damping arms 2 arranged in sequence round the plate inwardly of the spring arms, the arms being joined to the plate at a root 3 of one of their respective ends and the spring and damping arms being paired in radial alignment such that the angle at the centre of the plate subtended by each spring arm contains and is approximately equal to the angle at the centre of the plate subtended by the damping arms radially aligned therewith, the spring and damping arms being respectively bent out of the plane of the plate on opposite sides thereof for co-operation respectively with the movable valve member and with a stationary valve retaining member (not shown). For valves used without lubrication, the arms point all in the same circumferential direction (Fig. 1), whilst for lubricated valves, particularly for high-speed operation, the respective arms point in opposite circumferential directions (Fig. 2). The damping arms may be of greater width than the spring arms and the latter are preferably grounded out at their roots so as to equalize the rotary thrust exerted by the respective arms.
