Abstract

870,342. Cutting and crushing metal scrap. PROLER STEEL CORPORATION. June 23, 1958 [Aug. 12, 1957], No. 20063/58. Class 83(4). A process for refining contaminated raw ferrous scrap such as automobiles, refrigerators or washing - machines having a large proportion of sheetmetal of at least 0.0149 inch thickness, comprises shredding the raw scrap to a size small enough to pass through a one-foot opening, magnetically separating therefrom the ferrous material, roasting the latter to a temperature of 1300-1800‹ F. and then compacting it. The raw scrap consisting principally of unplated sheet-steel is loaded on conveyer 10 and transferred to a shredding mill 11 with a discharge grate of given dimension. Conveyer 13 transfers it to an inspection belt 14 and then to a magnetic pulley 16 which carries the ferrous material to a belt 17 and allows the non-ferrous to be discharged. The ferrous scrap then passes through a gas-heated rotary furnace where it is roasted to remove adhering impurities and the heated scrap, if necessary after tromelling, is compacted by a rolling-mill 19. Conveyer 20 moves the compacted scrap to a rotary screen 21 after which further magnetic separation may take place and a conveyer 22 then deposits it in a hopper 23 whose outlet 24 feeds another conveyer 25 leading to a discharge shoot 26.
