Abstract

A rubbery composition containing combined aldehyde is prepared by reacting a rubbery copolymer of an isoolefin with a multiolefin and optionally a third monomer and a C1 to C10 aliphatic or aromatic aldehyde or a substance forming such an aldehyde in situ, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Aldehydes specified are paraformaldehyde, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, valeraldehyde, benzaldehyde, tolualdehyde, cinnamaldehyde, anisaldehyde, acrolein, crotonaldehyde, trioxane, furfural, phenylacetaldehyde, salicylaldehyde, nitrobenzaldehyde and naphthaldehyde. The products may be compounded with fillers such as carbon black, silica, clay and metal oxides (e.g. titanium oxide), resins such as phenol/aldehyde, urea/aldehyde, phenol-dialcohol, and polyvinyl alkanol resins, oils, tars, pitches, waxes, esters and stearic acid, and cured using conventional curing agents and accelerators. The products find application in tyres and as coatings on metal, wood, fabrics, paper, "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark) and leather, as electrical insulation, and in the production of tyre curing bags, bladders, diaphragms, inner tubes, window channel strips, belting, proofed goods and steam hose.
