Abstract

870,216. Hopper barges. AMSTERDAMSCHE BALLAST MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 24, 1959, No. 14143/59. Class 113. In a hopper barge the bottom opening is closed by bouyant flaps 3 which are pivotally mounted on eccentrically located shafts 4, so that in the closed position the free ends of the flaps are above the horizontal plane through the shafts 4 are provided with flexible tubular sealing members 5 which are caused to expand and support the free ends of the flaps 3 by a pressure fluid fed from the reservoir 7 via the conduits 11 and 12, cylinder 10, conduit 8, below pivot 4 and conduit 6. Quadrants 17, secured to the pivot shafts 4, engage toothed racks on the piston rods 16 so that as the flaps 3 open and close the pistons 9 are caused to travel towards and away from each other. In the closed position, the stop valves 13 and 15 are closed, the weight of the charge on top of the flaps pressurised the fluid in the members 5. To discharge the barge the stop valve 13 is opened and the fluid is allowed to flow to the reservoir 7, reducing the widths of the members 5 and allowing the flaps to open under the weight of the charge. During opening the pistons 9 are caused to move towards each other and when completely open the bouyant flaps 3 are prevented from closing by the vacuum that such movement would create between the pistons due to the non-return valve 14. The valve 15 when opened allows fluid to flow back into the system and the flaps to close. One flap may be used to close the barge bottom opening with the member 5 bearing on a wall of the hopper.
