Abstract

Mineral silicates shown by X-ray crystallography to have double or triple layer lattices have bound water removed by heating the pulverulent mineral introduced into, and suspended in, a turbulent upwardly-rising current of heating gases to a temperature 500 DEG -1200 DEG C. for one second or less. The mineral, e.g. clay, kaolin, bentonite, or talc, is introduced, as dry solid through an injector, or as a suspension through an atomizer, axially into a vortex of hot gas. The vortex is formed by introducing combustion gases tangentially into the smaller end of a uniformly tapering chamber at 15-150 m/sec. and 600 DEG -1200 DEG C. The calcined mineral should be cooled below 300 DEG C. within 30 mins. After separation of the mineral hot gas may be recycled. Combustion air may be preheated, and part of the combustion may be in the chamber by adding gas, or oil, to the chamber.
