Abstract

1396018 Obtaining oil and gas from oil shale PETROLEO BRASILEIRO SA 4 Sept 1972 [6 Sept 1971] 40956/72 Heading C5E Oil and gas are obtained from oil shale by passing the shale down through a retort in which it is heated by direct contact with hot gas introduced at 8 at 400-800‹ C. and then cooled by gas introduced at 14; the gases introduced at 8 and 14 also serve to flush the oil and gas from the retort and are cooled as they preheat the shale entering the retort to a temperature of 100-177‹ C. at which a portion of the product is condensed to form a mist. A cyclone 20 is used to remove dust and heavy oil from the effluent gas 19 (these being separated at 25) and an electrostatic precipitator 22 separates a mineral oil stream 29 from the gas. The gas 40 is in part recycled to the retort as a cold gas 14, in part heated at 46 to provide the hot gas introduced into the retort at 8, and the remainder is cooled by direct contact with a water spray 61 or with a spray of cold light oil.
