Abstract

1398858 Pyrolysis of waste materials OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM CORP 2 Aug 1972 36073/72 Heading C1K [Also in Division C5] Waste materials containing organic solids are entrained in a turbulent stream of hot particulate char and carrier gas and passed into a pyrolysis zone for an average residence period of up to 10 seconds during which the waste materials are heated to 150-1400‹ C. by the char to produce volatile organic chemical and fuel values. A feed 2, such as municipal waste, manure, sewage sludge, tyres, oil processing waste, agricultural waste, industrial waste, tree bark, sawdust and rice hulls, is dried at 16 with air 10 and recycle gas 97. The dried waste is entrained in a stream of hot recycle gas 99 and hot recycle char 60 and passed through the pyrolysis reactor 32. The pyrolysis product is separated into a char stream 38, which is in part removed as char product 68 and in part recycled as hot char after reheating by partial combustion at 48, and a gaseous stream 76 which is separated into a gaseous product 93 an " oil " product 102 and an aqueous material 94. Metal and glass can be removed from the comminuted waste material before the pyrolysis and the feed to the pyrolysis zone can contain lime or iron oxide to assist desulphurization.
