Abstract

1372038 Combustion apparatus ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 30 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 45652/71 Heading F4B A method of generating heat which is withdrawn at 114 comprises contacting at 102 a melt 126 containing alkali metal ions and sulphide ions at a temperature of at least 300‹ C. with a reactive form of oxygen, e.g. air 112, to convert the sulphide ions to sulphate ions, and contacting at 104 the sulphate ions, preferably at a temperature of at least 600‹ C., with a carbonaceous material 120 to convert the sulphate ions to sulphide ions which may be returned to 102. By-products of the reactions in 104, e.g. hydrocarbons, partially oxygenated organic compounds and CO, may be combusted with air 128 or recycled to 102, and CO 2 produced is vented at 124. The method is performed in a vessel 100 optionally having a partition 106 apertured at 108, 110 to provide passages for the melt between zones 102, 104. The melt should have a sulphur content of 1 to 25% b.w. and preferably includes other salts, e.g. alkali metal carbonates, and a catalyst, e.g. iron in amounts of from 6À5 to 7% b.w. of the melt. The carbonaceous material may be natural gas, coke, coal, fuel oils, petroleum residues, lignite, peat, wood, municipal waste, sewage sludge, industrial waste, e.g. P.V.C., rubber, plastics, and agricultural wastes. Preferred temperatures in both zones range from 800‹ to 1200‹ C. Melt may be withdrawn at 122 for the removal of impurities and recycling at 116.
