Abstract

1454887 Pyrolysing carbonaceous materials ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 1 April 1975 [29 March 1974] 13348/75 Heading C5E A process for the production of a combustible low BTU gas comprises thermally decomposing a carbonaceous material with a source of oxygen which provides less than 60% of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen for the complete oxidation of the carbonaceous material in a molten salt bath comprising an alkali metal carbonate, the gas produced containing a volume ratio of CO to CO 2 greater than 5 : 1. In the apparatus shown, the carbonaceous material, in this case coal, is fed together with the alkali metal carbonate into a reactor vessel 100, air being supplied to the vessel via inlet 106 and distributor 108. An overflow weir 118 and outlet 112 controls the level of the molten salt bath 102, and constant withdrawal of the melt through these prevents build up of ash and sulphur compounds in the melt bath. The withdrawn melt may be recycled after regeneration. The salt bath, which is maintained at a temperature of 1400-2000‹ F., may comprise a mixture of alkali metal carbonates or be a mixture having a major portion of alkali metal carbonate and a minor portion (at least 1%) alkali metal sulphate or sulphide. The carbonaceous material may be coal (anthracite, lignite or bituminous) coke, fuel oil, petroleum residue, lignite, peat, wood, photographic film, plastics, pesticides and their containers, municipal wastes (household waste, sewage sludge) industrial wastes (P.V.C., scrap rubber) agricultural wastes (plant and animal waste material).
