Abstract

Polypyridyls are obtained by heating a salt of pyridine or a salt of a polypyridyl. The free base i.e. pyridine or a polypyridyl, may be present in addition to the salt. Preferably the reaction is carried out in the presence of a metal halide which forms complex compounds with condensation products of pyridine and polypyridyls, for example, halides of iron, zinc, copper, cobalt and nickel. Preferably the salt of pyridine or a polypyridyl used as starting material is the hydrochloride. The preferred temperatures for carrying out the process are in the range 270-340 DEG C. and the process may be carried out under elevated pressure. The surfaces of the reaction vessel which are in contact with the reaction mixture should be made of a material which is resistant to corrosion, e.g. tantalum. Examples are given of the preparation of 221-di-pyridyl and 2,21,211,2111-tetrapyridyl.
