Relates to a firing mechanism for automatic firearms in which there is an extended delay between actuation of the hammer and its striking of the firing pin such that the repeated operation of the firearm is considerably slowed down and also to means for varying such delay. As shown, the hammer 8 Fig. 1 is pivotally mounted at 7 on a member 6 pivoted freely on a bush 4 fixed to the gun casing and having an extension 17 adapted to be engaged by a projecting portion 16 of the breech block 1 as it slides forward. A pivot 9 fixed on the hammer supports the end of a rod 10 carrying the main spring 11, the other end passing through an aperture 13 in the gun casing 12 so as to permit pivotal movement of the rod and spring. In the position shown in Fig. 1 the pivot 9 is below the dead centre position in relation to pivots 7 and 13 and the spring urges the hammer away from the breech block to the position shown. As the breech block slides forwardly, the member 6 is swung anti-clockwise, the pivot 9 passes through the dead centre position Fig. 2 (not shown) whereupon the hammer is forced by the spring towards the breech block with a progressively but slowly increasing thrust to the final position shown in Fig. 3. The bush 4 is mounted eccentrically on a pin 3 fixed to the gun casing and is provided with a hand lever 5 by which the bush 4 can be rotated. Such rotation displaces the centre of the bush 4 so as to charge the moment at which the extension 16 strikes the extension 17 and thus vary the delay. In a modification the part 12 with the pivot 13 may be made movable and be lowered during the closing movement of the breech block instead of the part 6 being raised, the result being to bring the pivot 9 above the straight line through the pivots 7 and 13 as before.
