Abstract

868,657. Stereotaxical apparatus. UNIVERSITE DE LOUVAIN. April 1, 1959, No. 11075/59. Class 81 (2). A stereotaxic apparatus has a device, for holding the head, which is movable about three perpendicular axes. The patient is placed on a chair with the upper part of his head through the central space in a main frame 1, Fig. 1, which is pivoted, at the back of the chair, on an axis 2 which may be raised and lowered vertically. Adjustable holding-arms 7, 8 mounted on pillars 37, 38 are mounted in an arcuate slide adjustable by a screw 17 so as to be movable about a vertical axis 18 and this slide is itself mounted on another arcuate slide 19, controllable by a screw 25 so as to move around a horizontal axis 22. After the head has been positioned by means of the above adjustments it may be finally held by further adjustable rods 23, 24. A scale 26 is then placed in position and an X-ray photograph is taken on a plate 55, so that the vertical and horizontal position of the desired site may be determined. The scale 26 is then removed and a pivoted frame 41, Fig. 2, is placed on the sides of the frame 1. It is set in the desired fore-and-aft position, by scales 39, 40 and its side members are adjusted so that the pivotal axis 42 is at the height of the site. A second X-ray photograph is taken on a plate 60 to determine the position of the site in this plane and this is used in the adjustment of a horizontal slide 46 by means of which an arcuate slide 48 can be arranged to align an adjustable probe 52 with the site. The centre 53 of the arc then coincides with the site and the probe will reach it from whatever point on the arc 48 it may be directed.
