Abstract

868,542. Transformers. FOSTER TRANSFORMERS Ltd., and JENNINGS, R. E. July 24, 1958 [July 24, 1957], No. 23420/57. Class 38 (2). A toroidally wound voltage regulating transformer has the winding and core embedded in an insulating material, e.g. resin, 3, in such a way that part of the surface of the winding is exposed for engagement with a movable contact device. On one face at least the successive turns of the winding 4 pass over an annular raised surface towards the outer periphery, as at 5. A spindle 15, which is mounted centrally within the moulding, carries near its upper end a split screw-closed collar 18 having a projecting arm 19 which carries a carbon brush 6. By means of arm 21 and presser plate 20, which is held down by a spring, the brush is kept in contact with the bared part of the winding at 5; 20, 21 are pivoted at 22, being held in the normal operating position by a projection-recess arrangement. Electrical connection with brush 6 may be through a slipring (not shown) or crinkled washer 25 which presses on a metal plate 26 having a projecting tag 27 leading to a screw-fastening point 28. The moulding 3 incorporates a terminal block 10 and also metallic inserts to which a metal foot plate 12 may be attached. The top of the spindle 15 carries a graduated adjusting knob 17. Packing material 16, e.g. cardboard, surrounds the spindle, reducing the amount of resin required.
